Primeiro ano de vida

Aos oito meses, Pedro deu seus primeiros passos e já tinha seis dentes. O pai achou-o parecido com o irmão mais velho.

O filho de Clémence de Saisset e D. Pedro I nasceu em casa, como era o costume da época. Além do nome, o pai biológico decidiu que os padrinhos da criança seriam José Marcelino Gonçalves, Cavaleiro de S. M. a Imperatriz do Brasil, e a senhora Maria Elisabeth, esposa de Gustave Kieckhoefer, cônsul geral do Brasil em Paris. No ano anterior ao nascimento de Pedro, A filha dos Kieckhoefer, Augusta Elisabeth, havia se casado com Felisberto Caldeira Brant, o marquês de Barbacena, em grande cerimônia na Église de la Madeleine.

Marcelino Gonçalves vivia em Paris, onde já cuidava de uma meia-irmã de Pedro, a duquesa de Goiás, Isabel Maria de Alcantara Brasileira, depois que o pai resolveu que ela seria criada na Europa. Nascida em 1824, a menina era fruto da relação do Imperador com a também amante Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo.

Como toda mãe, Clémence considerava o filho acima da média para a idade. Em carta dirigida a Barbacena, mas de fato destinada aos olhos de D. Pedro, ela conta que o pequeno, um dia antes de completar nove meses, deu seus primeiros passos, e desde os oito meses já tinha seis dentes. “...é a criança mais linda que se possa ver. Ele tem uma força extraordinária e a semelhança com Sua Majestade é impressionante”21.

No mesmo contato, a francesa buscou ressaltar o compromisso firmado quando ela deixou o Brasil e queria ver concretizadas as garantias financeiras prometidas ao filho. “...meu único objetivo é lembrar Sua Majestade que mantive-me digna dos benefícios oferecidos, desde que os aceitei. E que os sentimentos que a ele dediquei permanecem inalterados.” 21 Os pagamentos não eram constantes, chegavam por um tempo, cessavam sem aviso e voltavam a ocorrer depois de muita cobrança.

Assim como Chalaça, Lassere, e Barbacena, o marquês de Resende, Antonio Teles da Silva Caminha e Meneses, também intermediava os contatos com Pierre e Clémence em nome de D. Pedro. Antonio Teles era embaixador do Brasil na França. O quarteto estava encarregado de negociar as demandas, manter os Saisset sob controle e transmitir ao pai Imperador notícias da criança. “O retrato foi recebido e meu Amo mandou dizer-lhe que se parecia muito com o Principezinho”22, informa Chalaça em 5 de abril de 1831.

The son of Clémence de Saisset and D. Pedro I was born at home, as was the custom at the time. In addition to the name, the biological father decided that the child's godparents would be José Marcelino Gonçalves, Knight of SM the Empress of Brazil, and Mrs. Maria Elisabeth, wife of Gustave Kieckhoefer, Consul General of Brazil in Paris. The year before Pedro was born, the Kieckhoefers' daughter, Augusta Elisabeth, had married Felisberto Caldeira Brant, the Marquis of Barbacena, in a grand ceremony at the Église de la Madeleine.

Marcelino Gonçalves lived in Paris, where he already took care of a half-sister of Pedro, the Duchess of Goiás, Isabel Maria de Alcantara Brasileira, after her father decided that she would be raised in Europe. Born in 1824, the girl was the result of the emperor's relationship with his lover Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo.

Like every mother, Clémence considered her son to be above average for his age. In a letter addressed to Barbacena, but in fact intended for the eyes of D. Pedro, she tells that the little one, the day before he was nine months old, took his first steps, and since he was eight months old, he already had six teeth. “... he is the most beautiful child you can see. He has extraordinary strength and the resemblance to His Majesty is striking”.

In the same contact, the Frenchwoman sought to highlight the commitment made when she left Brazil and wanted to see the financial guarantees promised to her son materialize. “...my only object is to remind Your Majesty that I have held myself worthy of the benefits offered, since I accepted them. And that the feelings I dedicated to him remain unchanged.” Payments were not constant, they arrived for a while, ceased without notice and then reappeared after much demand.

Like Chalaça, Lassere, and Barbacena, the Marquis of Resende, Antonio Teles da Silva Caminha e Meneses, also mediated contacts with Pierre and Clémence on behalf of D. Pedro. Antonio Teles was Brazil's ambassador to France. The quartet was in charge of negotiating the demands, keeping the de Saissets in check, and relaying news of the child to the emperor father. “The portrait was received and my Master sent word that he looked a lot like the Little Prince” informs Chalaça on April 5, 1831.
